Learned the Hendrix Classic tonight, mostly learned. Still need to crack the solo. Shouldn’t be too hard – doesn’t sound complicated… famous last words. Think Lynard Skynard’s Freebird in full chorus will be nixt on da hitlist.

But no tomorn… tomorn i’m gonna be tryin to rattlyn together chocolate orange brownies.

Things are goin good. Work is going well. I’m even managing to work around the inconvenient attractions/distractions (depending what tariff you use) to my left and centre. Accountancy is not for dusty balding old men; its young and hot!

So whits been hapnin – Still working, as I said its going well. I’m getting a fair bit of responsibility – including a bit of basic training to the newest recruit Shelly. Lovely lass. Taken, bad show. Just as well I suppose. Used to work over with 2Halls… wonder what an outsider thinks of working in Montfield? I imagine they would think its pretty tightly wound… it is.

The place I work is very unique. I’d liken in to a German Supercar: Very efficient, very clean, very very good at what it is supposed to do… but lacking in soul or passion. I do enjoy it. The environment is exactly where I want to be; a place where very few mistakes are made, and when anyone makes a mistake it is unacceptable and dealt with. A month’s secondment in Hayfield will make you sloppy. If I work for the council I would need to work here, or nowhere.

That said its looking more and more unlikely by the day that I’ll end up at the council. There are three Seniors off on Maternity, the three existing assistant have been bumped up to acting Senior and three newbies are in. One with an unparalleled knowledge of the Council, superb work ethic, reserved nature and an inability to make mistakes. One with a Accounts Degree, great experience in the public finance sector, extremely sharp and more inability to make mistakes. And me, who appeared out of the blue, pissed everybody off with my radio preferences, over casual approach and is prone to making silly mistakes on routine tasks. This might not end well for me. Ah well, a lot of them could do with a serious regime change – many of them have been in the comfort zone too long and inefficiencies are starting to shine through. Its a competition, and I need to win. The best way to win is to be the best at the job – textbook poison defence:  Do the job so well, nobody could do it better. Slowly push the boundaries of responsibility, but don’t over-reach. Work on initiative, but don’t fly by wire. Know the surroundings and get familiar with key people, but don’t kiss ass and bow every minute. Understand that the boss is never wrong, but the person in the position of boss is very human. Friendly competition – and she can be beaten.
